Craft night this week was inspired by DesignSponge. Jazzed up old jam jars look great with a lid makeover. I'm going to put cotton balls and Q-tips in mine. And we decorated rocks with gold leaf! They would look nice in a pot with a plant.

Trottin' bear
I have no idea what my plans were for this bear that I found in my sketchbook from a few months ago was, but I think he's silly.
Things on my mind
Sculptural Terrariums , Amanda Wachob's beautiful work, Society Six website (thanks Amy!), have yet to set up a shop.
Radio
I love my ipod as much as the next person, but isn't it a shame that we don't have these lovely objects in our lives anymore?
IF: Adrift
Adrift! A little boat adrift!
And night is coming down!
Will no one guide a little boat
Unto the nearest town?
So Sailors say -- on yesterday --
Just as the dusk was brown
One little boat gave up its strife
And gurgled down and down.
So angels say -- on yesterday --
Just as the dawn was red
One little boat -- o'erspent with gales --
Retrimmed its masts -- redecked its sails --
And shot -- exultant on!

Keepin it Spicy
I made these brownies from Smitten Kitchen! They have Chipotle in them, which I had a hard time tracking down. Luckily a little spice store that's near me had it. These are really rich and they definitely bring the heat! They'd be awesome for valentines day. Look at those beautiful colors the spices make and that fun cocoa packaging!

THE ship wheel lamp!
This is a birthday card I made for one of my very best friends, Simon. It has a really funny story behind it, so I decided to share. Last summer, Simon and I were at a little antique store in Park Slope called "Under the Pig." Outside, glinting in the sunshine was a little lamp. A ship wheel was attached to it, and the chain linked through the wheel so that when you turned it, the lamp clicked on. The lampshade had a nautical sailboat scene on it. It had some nicks and tears on it, but it added to that charm of being a very loved object. Simon was instantly enamored with it, but the price tag was a bit steep, so he reluctantly put it back among the china plates and dusty books in the store's display. A week later, he rushed back, having changed his mind, but the little ship wheel lamp was gone. I searched on ebay for it's equal, but was unsuccessful. So I made this drawing instead to keep the memory of that little lamp alive. I'm pleased with it, and I think Simon liked it too!
It's here!
I'm now the proud owner of "The Making of Fantastic Mr. Fox"! It's a beautiful object, designed by Pentegram. It's filled with interviews, sketches, storyboard panels, and puppets. It calls attention to the extreme detail that Wes Anderson put into making this film: Mr.Fox's desk is modeled after a photo of Roald Dahls, right down to balls of aluminum foil that Dahl wold make out of chocolate wrappers! Little tributes like that are made throughout the book, referencing past illustrators of the book and Dahl's life. The book without it's jacket is a ribbed ochre paper, undoubtably a reference to Mr.Fox's yellow corduroy jacket that is his signature uniform in the movie. A lovely, subtle design choice. This book is dense with inspiration images and information, and I'm quite pleased to add it to my collection of inspirational books! This would make a great addition to anyone's collection who is a fan of puppets, stop motion, Wes Anderson, or mischievous animals who just want their share of the cider.

Boulud Burger Lunch!
My pal Jeff won tickets to a free gourmet lunch and was nice enough to invite me! Our secret lunch truck contained none other than celebrity chef Daniel Boulud, who served us neatly packaged luxury from an ordinary lunch truck! The line was long and the weather was brisk, but this buttery, perfectly cooked burger with peppery watercress and some unidentified melty cheese was worth it. To go along with the burger was a rich raspberry trifle with a sprinkling of shortbread cookie crumbs and topped with a perfect plump raspberry. Yum!

Sage and Pancetta Biscuits with Fontina Cheese
Mmmm, these biscuits are amazing, I just had two piping hot ones and now our apartment smells wonderfully of bacon. The recipe is from Epicurious. I got these gorgeous pieces of cheese from whole foods...the wrapping is so lovely I wonder what the whole wheel looks like! These will be great with soup later tonight on this blustery day! I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking...

IF: Focused
This word made me think of lenses-microscope-disgusting germy celly things. Illness has been going around our office and I'm worried I'm next! Hopefully I won't get taken down by one of these microscopic beasts.
Subway Gal
Last week I was taking the F train to work on this dreary day and this girl got on at the Carroll stop. She was pretty hipster-d out with big glasses and this huge green puffy coat. Stuffed inside the coat was this hilarious little dog, full of energy. It was a funny contrast to see her sitting there, still waking up and this dog super excited to be alive. Yay for NYC moments!
